In March 2009 I scanned a single roll of medium-format portraits of a handball player nobody outside Hungary could name, and I posted them to a domain I'd registered that morning. There was no business plan. There was only the suspicion that English-language readers who cared about Hungarian culture — the diaspora, the cinephiles, the scouts — deserved a patient, well-edited place to find the women who shape how Hungary is seen abroad.
Sixteen years later we are still doing that, only now we have an editorial board of six in Budapest, a contributor network of sixty across the country, four language editions, and 1,840+ profile pages we refresh every single month. What has not changed is the brief: write about these women the way a thoughtful print magazine would, photograph them as often as we can, and never sell the impression that we represent any of them.
